Welcome to Fruit Tree, a brand new forum for the UK’s pomologists! We are a small group of fruit tree experts who aim to spread our love of growing by providing a database of our knowledge and expertise that is easily accessible to all.

You may think that a ‘fruit tree’ is simply a tree that bears fruit. However, the horticultural definition is a little different. For us, a ‘fruit tree’ is a tree that bears fruit that is consumed or used by people. We say this is to narrow down the definition to suit our interests, it allows us to speak only in terms of the trees that interest us. After all, every tree that is a flowering plant naturally produces a fruit of some sort. A ‘fruit’ is generally defined to be the ripened ovary of the flower, containing one or more seeds. From this, it is clear that such a wide definition is extremely over inclusive. By way of an example, the follicle of the magnolia tree is technically a fruit, but it is not a fruit for the purposes of the pomologist.

Please browse our website to discover more about the many different varieties of fruit tree that thrive in the UK, how you can grow them and how to care for them.
